An argument has sprung up on the wizards boards (no real surprise there) about whether or not Moonstars can take harper prestige classes. I've been arguing that Moonstars who have left the harpers retain their prc's, but do not gain the benefit of the various divine blessings inherent in these prestige class since they have turned their backs on the harpers. This has largely been over-run by people who claim that there is no reason for one to turn their backs on the harpers in order to join the moonstars.

Am I simply way off base with my assumption?

I don't currently have my copy of Cloak and Dagger (it's been lent out).

The discussion is here: http://boards1.wizards.com/showthread.php?s=&threadid=242726

If it matters, I agree with you and I don't see why some one would keep thier harper benefits since that being isn't a harper any longer.

For some of us, books are as important as almost anything else on earth. What a miracle it is that out of these small, flat, rigid squares of paper unfolds world after world, worlds that sing to you, comfort and quiet and excite you... Books are full of the things that you don't get in real life - wonderful, lyrical language, for instance, right off the bat. - Anne Lamott, Bird by Bird

No surprise-you don't gain game benefits for doing such-you actually lose them. I'd treat this on a case by case basis-depending upon the Moonstar in question, and their actions for the Harpers and Moonstars.

According to PGtF,

There is a section on Ex-harper Agents (page 59).
Among violations of Haper Code is says

"Any Harper who...intentionally turns away from the Harpers quickly gains a reputation in the organization. Such an individual can no longer progress in the Harper Agent prestige class". If further state that the character loses all deity related abilities.

I think the deities will know if the true heart of the character (thus if a player says they are playing a double agent in the Moonstars etc).

Since there are so many divine based abilities I would say it is similar to switching deities. And a Moonstar should be penalized as listed above.

Cloak and Dagger defines the break between the factions as a "Schism" (ENCARTA - splitting into factions: the division of a group into mutually antagonistic factions) So I can see this as being a very unpleasant and even violent break, regardless of the good intetnions of both sides.

Just My Thoughts

I have to agree with Arivia. Obviously, each and every individual Harper is going to have his/her own reasons for joining the Moonstars, and having one complete decision which blankets the entire spectrum of reasons will do nothing but further anger the player involved.

Ultimately the decision should rest with the DM, but the loss of benefits that come as part of the various divine blessings must be retained. It's essential, and further demonstrates the schism between not only ideaologies, but between the organisations as a whole. If the Moonstar player retains the access to the divine blessings, then there really isn't a defined effect for the character to leave the Harpers, he/she simply makes a choice a walks off into the sunset...and that doesn't sound quite right .

does cloak and dagger include information on how moonstars and harpers get along?

It does go into detail about the Schism and the relations between both groups somewhat. And Steven's also discussed the relations between the two groups here at Candlekeep. Visit Kuje's site in his sig and download the compiled reply files.

Page 85 of City of Splendors: Waterdeep, under the Moonstar Agent PrC:

quote:
Characters with levels in the Harper agent prestige class can take levels in the Moonstar agent prestige class without losing any of their Harper agent abilities, and vice-versa.

So, as far as the gods are concerned, Moonstars and Harpers are the same. While someone could turn away from the Harpers to become a Moonstar, it's not necessary to leave the group in such a way as to cause the loss of abilities. In other words, you don't have to break with the Harpers to be a Moonstar.
