where is it exactly the lower or middledark???

the 3e undedrakbook says middle shantar... the map with it makes me think lowerdark.... so which is it canonwise?
why is being a wizard like being a drow? both are likely to find a dagger in the back from a rival or one looking to further his own goals, fame and power

Well, the prior 2e Drizzt Do'Urden's Guide to the Underdark says "middle Underdark."
