I want my group to stumble upon an elven history book. It will have been written 800-900 years earlier. Some researcher writing about his findings and dating them.

But I came up with an odd problem what year marking to put the dates in? I'd guess that DR would work, the year would have been 570ish DR for the historian. But would an elf in an elven city/empire be dating things using that calendar?

The Netheril calendar is much older but it too seems wrong for elf to be dating by that as well. I found the Aryselmalyr calendar even older than the than the Netheril one but those elves are undersea ones.

Elves have been around for a long time they must have some system other than these? Anyone have any suggestions or sources?

Rogue: So what's in the general store?
DM: What are you looking for?
Rogue: Whatevers in the store.
DM: Like what?
Rogue: Everything.
DM: There is a lot of stuff.
Rogue: Is there a cart outside?
DM: (rolls) Yes.
Rogue: We'll take it all, we may need it for the greater good.

a rough area would be of some help here

maybe they use a calendar based on the founding of Evermeet (Evermeet Reconing) in -9800DR ... which would be around 10370ish ER ... pay mind that this calendar of my knowledge doesn't exist per canon but it is one that i think could be used

what happened to the queen? she's much more hysterical than usual
She's a women, it happens once a month

Cormanthyr offers a section on elven time-keeping [pg. 20]. It should be useful in helping you to determine how to offer date/year notation in the elven method.

Two ideas...

1) Go with Dalereckoning. It is a common measure, and it does mark the time from a human-elven agreement.

2) Make up something based on rulership. If it's an empire, it's likely they keep time by using the length of rulership for a seated ruler.

BTW, you will find this sourcebook as a free pdf file at the Wizards download page.

Thank you all very much. These response are very much in line with what I imagined elves would do.

This will help add a bit more flavor to a simple encounter of a few lines of a book.

Master Procrastinator Sage,

I did reference that page in Cormanthyr and didn't see anything about date/year notation, unless you are referring to the Elven nations, cities, etc. keeping track by the years of a reigning ruler? Is that what you meant, or did I overlook something there?

Best regards,

Yes, I believe the posters were talking about the rysar system. Eric Boyd came up with a great "gem calendar" idea for the realm of Siluvanede (formerly in the High Forest) that will hopefully get published one day as part of his Crown of Eaerlann product. I'm sure other calendars existed.

Master Krashos,

Fantastic. Thank you for that. You know, I probably saw that word at some point, rysar that is, and just overlooked it somehow.

I would absolutely love to check out that Crown of Eaerlann product when it comes out. Have you heard of any sort of timeframe on that?

Best regards,

Oh I keep bugging him, but Eric keeps hopping to anther project. I suspect that he'll be releasing something else before Crown. Likely next year sometime. Fingers crossed.
