One of the best choices, though tough to come by, 2nd Edition Ral Partha AD&D lead miniatures...ebay is just about your only hope for these.
Reaper has some great minis too, though they obviously cannot provide D&D specific things like Beholders and Rust Monsters. There are a number of other companies that make gorgeous sculpts...but the price quickly becomes tough to swallow.
As for the official line of plastics I personally find them ugly, but I will buy some of the cheaper ones for things I cannot locate elsewhere. And for battle reference you can always use chess pieces or even dice.
