What would happen if there was only one spellcasting class? If there were only wizards, for instance, but they could learn any spell? There seem to be obvious game balance issues, but without other magic-based classes to contend with, such a caster would only be a challenge in their versatility. The enhanced spell list would be balanced by the fact that they would either specialize or likely spread themselves too thin, trying to heal, protect, and attack, rather than relying on backup casters who might normally fill those roles.

But what have all the passing years/Done, but breed new angers, fears?/Show me now an equal worth/To innocence I earned at birth.

I think it could definitely be done and a great game could blossom from it. Care would need be taken to balance issues of specialists vs. generalists vs. dabblers, but it could definitely be done.

However, I do not think it could be done for the Forgotten Realms.

Here. I'll really blaspheme. Personally, I'm a far bigger fan of 3rd edition Runequest for mechanics in terms of fantasy gaming. RQ offers no class system, level system, hit points do not go up as one progresses, and yet it is a far more balanced, realistic, and ultimately simpler system than the current 3.5 edition.

Ok, that off my chest back to the discussion.

This was presented as one of the options in Unearthed Arcana, specifically under the Generic Classes heading. Under that, you're either a warrior, expert, or spellcaster. Any guess which does what? Anyway, said spellcaster can cast either arcane or divine spells(note that this doesn't affect spell selection at all)-but always casts spells like a sorcerer(slots, not prepared spells, I mean). I'm not going to go into more detail, for fear of provoking parties from Alaundo on.

You're not alone-although I'm a minor Mage and Vampire addict, personally.
