That's an interesting concept. Obviously Nuurn's name is known to some degree....or is a pseudonym or alias. Perhaps it can't be vocalized, but can be conveyed in written form, which is why Ilmagarr is so well-read, searching through obscure lore for mention of his sire. Or perhaps that's why he works for the Xanathar, who claims to have just the name he seeks.

Yeah, the two-man saw was the image I meant. Wikipedia says it's "known colloquially as a 'misery whip'"; in the Realms I assume that name came about not only through the labor involved, but also from nasty exposure to elven arrows and druidic insect swarms in the course of human logging attempts.



And more good details on the various adventures of the Sky Pony tribe....I'm pretty sure this is collectively the most anyone has written of them since FR5 The Savage Frontier.

Baerimn "Mage of Many Staves" (LN HM W)
A stout, grizzled old mage, one of the city's judicial "black-robes" (magisters). With his salt-and-pepper stubble, icy blue eyes, and broad shoulders, Baerimn looks more warrior than wizard. He speaks in a hoarse voice (the result of an old spellduel), and is very blunt and forthright, wasting no extra effort on flowery speech or riddles. As his nickname notes, he has a passion for staves and walking sticks of all sorts. His favorite (and most often carried) is Aerimnae, a masterful length of ashwood whose tip is carved into the upper body of a mirthful elven lass, framed by long twirling hair and tiny motes of faerie fire.

Baerklar "The Black Stag"
Neveren warrior and commander of men. During the Black Horde seige of Waterdeep he led several successful sorties against the orc masses but was at last captured by them and put to death by impalement. The Poison-Drinker tribe used his body as a battle standard until they were routed by a force of Waterdhavians under the command of Laraekh Var. Cremated and his ashes mixed into the mortar used for the rebuilding of the North Wall, as was the custom with many fallen heroes of the war.

Baeruld & Finefettle
Hire-chefs. Often used to service the mage-revels and Revels Arcane at the Tower of the Order. ("Able Dressers of Flesh and Fish & All Manner of Fantastic Beast. Hearthmasters in service to the Watchful Order since 1362DR")

Bakkan and Glerd
"Soot" and "Sot." Local Dock Ward cutpurses, often work in tandem. Named for their swarthy, disheveled condition and their general inebriation (respectively). Bakkan enjoys finding "jools" and cutting off the ringed fingers of rich prey, while Glerd simply seeks a coinpurse heavy enough to pay for another night at the bottom of a tankard. Members of the Headsmen street gang.

Ballandan Bambrusk
The youngest (and most favored) son of Abardan Bambrusk. A shiftless adventurer (as "Ballandan the Brave," a member of the Lady's Fortunate Fellows), and former acolyte at the Tower of Luck (as "Bally-Hey, Lord of the Endless Tankards," still a coin-loose favorite of many fellow acolytes and underpriests). Attended by his manservant/herald/chronicler, the gnome Bartlegus (N GM Exp1/Illu2).

Klaskur Blackgulph
Proprietor of Klaskur's Reliable Caroches and Carry-Wagons (Caravan Street south of Tulmaster's, South Ward. "Carriages for Hire. Cogs and Caravans met. Appointments and High-Gown Parties promptly attended to and executed with reliability"). His coaches are dark green in color, with bright red shafts and wheels. Requests for specific colorations of horses, additional cushionings or accompanying exit fanfare are met willingly but cost extra.

Kleskul "Wormwood"
Knobby, dark and well-pocked, like a length of wood given over to boring worms. Small, dark eyes hidden under bushy black eyebrows. Has a keen eye for gems, both appraising, re-cutting, and fencing. Can be contacted at the Thirsty Throat tavern.

Korla "Mother Quaff"
Thick-set. Broad face, bushy brown eyebrows and wild shock of hair under colorful scarf. Fell out of a tree climbing for summerhawk chicks as a youth, rendering her right leg lame thereafter. Sells small-beer and "summer-quench" (water scented variously with cucumber or mint) in the warmer months, and a variety of broths (vegetable or animal) and swill-rum when the weather turns frigid. Traverses the Market and the length of the city's main roads in her daily rounds, equipped with her cart and her coin-cry; "Nib-tipples, copper-draughts! Clear and quaffable! Potations as you go!"

Korlyn Haelstarn Amcathra (CG HM Aris4/F4)
A young noble of House Amcathra (son of Vehn Haelstarn and Shershael Amcathra). Once content with a life of wining and wenching, he swiftly found purpose and success in the Guard after the events of Halaster's Harvestide. Recently promoted to a civilar (captain) of the Griffon Guard (Gold Wing). Rides the griffon named Black Boon.

Kuthil el Haevarkhos (LN HM Exp2)
(COO-Thel Hay-VAR-Kose) The owner and proprietor of Kuthil's Magemasks, a Sea Ward shop that specializes in enchanted full-face masks of the kind worn at noble parties. Imported from far Calimshan and Halruaa these masks will, when worn for a time (4-8 hours, the length of a typical ball or fête), mold to the wearers face and magically laugh, frown, and contort as if they were real flesh and blood. Further, those of a beastial appearance allow their wearer to snarl, roar, trill, hiss or blow plumes of colored smoke, as would the actual beast the mask represents. Kuthil also sells exotic scents and glim-enchantments, as well as minor body illusions and alterations (changes in hair, skin, or eye color and temporary scarring or body-tattoos are always popular).

It seems that a hagspawn barbarian youth on dajemma from Rashemen has become convinced that this shop has "stolen Rashemi secrets from the witches", and in a loyalist fashion he seeks to find adventurers to put this shop owner out of business. Where he's getting the money from is little known, for he left Rashemen with nothing on his back but his weapons and armor and a small bit of gold. However, it appears he has been successful in his dajemma, for he obviously has upgraded equipment and money to spare. There are those who whisper that he is in contact with a group of durthans active in the area which may include a hag who is his own mother. Others whisper that these "durthans" are actually masked Leiran priests playing on the young barbarian's naivety.

Aleric Far-Faring
An early war captain of Nimoar's Hold. Legendary for his raids on the "pirate thanes" of Ruathym and Orlumbor. It was on one of those raids that he met (and was bested by) his future wife, the Storm Sorceress Elendvalûe, and also where he gained the Winding Warhorn of Kozah, the enchanted weapon that formed the backbone of Waterdeep's armies for a number of years. He and his ship, the Deepwater Sword, were last sighted south of Toaridge-at-the-Sun's-Setting, heading towards Corwell Town.

Aleric Hawkwinter (CN HM Aris/F)
A noble of House Hawkwinter. Married to Narae (N HF) and father of a son, Anthonin, and two daughters, Murleene and Theera. An active recruiter of mercenaries and an avid horseman. Aleric is rarely to be found in the city, as he spends most of his time scouring the cities of the Western Heartlands for able-bodied hireswords. Wields The Jundsblade, an enchanted everbright broadsword and a Hawkwinter family heirloom.

Aleric Longsword (N HM Exp/T)
Red-gold hair, fair complexion. Tall and graceful, moves with assurance and confidance. A native of Hendelhearth in Ruathym. Captain of the Sail of Seas, a caravel of the Dezlentyr merchant fleet.

Aleric "Red-Leathers"
A woodsman and ranger who roamed the Dessarin a century ago. Famed for the distinctive ruddy hue of his leggings, said to be from the spilled blood of countless orcs and other goblinkin. Often accompanied in his travels by the beastmaster Iravensblood, and the brown bear called Stronglas.

Aleuadae (N ½EF Aris3/P4 of Lliira)
(ah-LOO-ah-day) The Laughing Lady. Short and slender, with long, shimmering platinum hair and sparkling emerald eyes (it is often whispered that her striking features have been enhanced with the aid of certain cosmetic enchantments, of the kind popular in Calimshan and the Tashalar). The "Elf-Queen of Castle Ward," as she is called in the broadsheets, is one of the more well-known of the city's socialites and "revel-matrons." She is the speaker (contact) for the Light Laughter, a well-regarded traveling troupe of Evereskan dancers and musicians. She also owns the largest chap-book collection of steamy romances, bodice-rippers, passion-plays, torrid love triangles (and quadrangles, &etc.), and illicit inter-species debaucheries in all Waterdeep (and quite possibly all of the North), a collection she began some thirty years ago. She has had these volumes collected and re-bound as proper books, and has filled the shelves of her "Room of Merry Revels," an entire suite of three chambers of her Castle Ward abode in which she spends her days, lounging in a variety of comfortably-cushioned chairs and reading and re-reading the various unfolding lurid exploits and lusty doings contained within.
        In addition to perusing her collection, Aleuadae now spends her idle time and idle wealth paying local painters to depict scenes from the books in the most vivid manner possible. Most of these are of handswidth-size, which she then arranges to have re-bound into the collections they were inspired by. Others, her favorite scenarios, are commissioned full-length and framed, and increasingly occupy the chamber adjacent. She is toying with the idea of submitting these pieces for the "soft enchantments" of Baerimel Thaelwood, or Jaseldra "The Eyes of Bliss," or perhaps Maeluuth "The Soft Master" of Yhaunn, master-enchanters all of arcanagraphs (paintings that have minor illusions cast on them suggesting motion – hair of person stirring occasionally in unseen winds, a smile that comes and goes, the gaze of the depicted person moving about, small gestures, etc.), a hugely expensive process which may finally bring an end to her fortune. Whenever that happens, or upon her demise, the House of Beauty has a standing (and steadily increasing) offer to purchase the bulk of her obsession.

Love the term arcanagraphs and would like to hear your ideas for Winding Warhorn of Kozah, the enchanted weapon that formed the backbone of Waterdeep's armies for a number of years. Like what do you think the warhorn might do? My first thoughts were like a ring of the ram for blasting things.... as that would fit with Kozah's destructive nature. However, I'm also picturing something like an elemental version of a Horn of Valhalla, one that can maybe summon a small army of mephitis, a platoon of elemental myrmidons, or a pair of something more powerful. Then again, it might control the weather to control the battlefield. What's some other options you might envision?

"Arcanagraphs" were also mentioned in my Feb 1st entry for "Farfander." Not sure where I got the name from but the accompanying description (like most of my better ideas) comes straight from Ed (relayed through THO in this case) in an Oct 18th reply in the 2004 Ask Ed thread.

As I'm sure you've figured out by now, I like descriptions much more than mechanics. For the Winding Warhorn I thought maybe calling a/multiple storm of vengeance (black storm clouds! thunder! lightnings!) and left it at that. But mephits (lightning?) or weather control abilities would suit just as well.

Nesrûme
A senior member of the Watchful Order (holds a secondary office under the Accomplished Master of Divinations). A diminutive and energetic woman bent on organizing everything around her. Nervous, fussy, diligent. Wears a silver ring fashioned as two entwined snakes grasping a blue jasper stone between thier jaws (a ring of proof against poison).

Nesrumé and Jalayn
Brother and sister acolytes at the Shrines of Nature. Tasked with gathering (carefully, with an eye to sustainable harvesting) herbs, roots, berries, leaves and bark from the lands surrounding the city for use in the Shrines and for offer or for sale to visiting rangers and local herbalists. "Nesré" is plain, short and shy, and is fascinated by hawks and hunting falcons (and well known to the nobility who hunt their birds in the Meadows as a result). "Merry Jal" is short as well, slender and has a low, musical voice and a fondness for pranks and jokes. Both are apprenticed to the Forestarm, Flamerond "Greenbriar" Hornfallow.

Nidanae of Tymora (CG HF F6)
Daughter of the deceased Tymorite priest Faerlthann. Slender body, long straight black hair, well-tanned skin. Has her mother's dry wit and her father's impish grin and mirthful brown eyes. A civilar (captain) of the Waterdhavian Griffon Guard (Long Wing). Rides the griffon named Whisperwing. A lay member ("helper of the faith") at the Tower of Luck when not on guard duty. Lover of the festhall singer Breara Brorn.

Nyphold "Glimmer-Gowk"
Called "Glimmer-Gowk" (owlbear) as he is a large, hunched man with large, staring eyes, a dark widow's peak and a hooked nose. Slow and deliberate in both pace and speech. Proprietor of Nyphold's Den of Astral Delights (Keltarn Street, Castle Ward), a heavily-curtained and -carpeted parlor where customers recline on pillow and divan and inhale deeply of scented, numbing vapors, similar to the languor-dens of the Thayans or the smokegilds of the Calishites. "Etherial pleasures, fashioned from hush and dew and star."

Nyrjalla
The Red Beauty. Valquess (queen) of the barbarian tribes of the western Shaar. Named for the fiery sheen of her hair. Also known as Nyrjalla the Bloody, for her merciless treatment of captured outlanders (stories propagated by Calishite factors). Said to be a favored of Sune and Tempus, and to be able to enspell any man that enters her domain. A frequent subject of bawdy-plays in the Lower Wards (especially popular with folk of southern descent).

Marasiah Ulbrinter
A noble of House Ulbrinter (middle daughter of Nomus and Karya). Very tall, quiet and pale, with knee-length black hair and sharp-looking eyes. A student of the Dark Art (necromancy). Was last seen in Amn, at the aftermath of the Battle of the Bloody Dawn, collecting the viscera and the coagulated lifes-blood runoff of the participants, both human and monstrous, for unknown purpose.

Marauth "Manyjools" (NE HM)
Humorous, good company (especially to those paying his tavern tab). Also thoroughly amoral, and exceedingly vicious when angered. Stocky, dark, grizzled. Light on his feet. Good at dancing, bad at swordplay (prefers knife or cudgel). Has a fancy for pale and freckled women. An enforcer for the Xanathar.

Markos Zellizands (N HM Aris3/P7 of Tymora)
Prior of the Inner Temple of the House of Luck. A native of Chondath. Markos is an athletic man of medium height and build. He has rich brown eyes, a mop of curly black hair, and sports a well-groomed moustache and beard. Bears a thumbnail-sized heart-shaped birthmark on his left temple. Adventurous, curious, and quick to strike up conversations with people. He fancies himself as a poet and writer, and has penned a number of syrupy collections of love poems and a handful of passable "sword-and-cloak" romances (with a thinly-disguised version of himself as the male lead, of course). He also frequently contributes temple gossip to several broadsheets under the pen-name of "Zamerghos the Cloaked-Quill."
        Markos is absolutely smitten with the courtesan Shyrrhr. He has publicly proclaimed that, aside from his goddess, he will have no other woman, and his efforts to gain her favor are the stuff of legend (the entire field of rare Lapaliiyan honeygold orchids he had delivered to the way outside her domicile and the twenty pirouetting-and-pinwheeling crystal drakes that accompanied them are still talked of in the Court). Marlesk
Proprietor of Dweomers Divers and Cerule, a cramped ground-floor "smallwand" (cantrips, minor vastations and vermin vexes) shop on the Street of Bells, Castle Ward. Also deals in alchemical substances (essences of this and that, scales and scraps of hide and flesh, powdered metals, et cetera) from afar. Tall and bony, has a voice reduced to a harsh rasp, the result of a persistent coughing sickness in his youth.

Marloon Stavenstaff
Famed author of In The Company of Mages and The Unpublished Weal of Sattarm Sevenslakes. Spent some twelve winters feebleminded by a jealous rival before dying of a wasting disease in the back alleys of Dock Ward.

"The Battle of the Bloody Dawn" is where I had the Amnian legions routed by the Syphilis Empire, clearing their path to the seige of Murann. I honestly don't know if the Twisted Rune were involved (on either side) with any of that but then again, I also don't know if Marasiah is an agent of the Rune or not, sooo....

Mad Felnagus
The name given to the malevolent madman responsible for a rash of unsolved magical attacks that plagued Waterdeep a century ago. This unknown assailant set himself to casting a modified magic mouth dweomer on the doors of various taverns, private abodes and festhalls (even at least one of the jakes of the Blushing Mermaid festhall). When activated, a bewhiskered human mouth would appear upon the ensorcelled portal, utter the words "Well met, Felnagus," and then spit forth a gout of flame or acid upon the unfortunate who triggered it. The caster was never found, and eventually came to be known as "Mad Felnagus," a source of considerable urban lore, especially in Trades Ward, where many of the attacks occurred.

Maethlarra Methilstars
Holds the office of Bright Horn (speaker) of the House of Heroes. Makes a point of knowing the names, deeds, and personal badges of the great heroes and adventuring companies of the North and the Western Heartlands. When such personages find themselves in the city, often the first local they encounter is a runner bearing an invitation personally addressed from the Office of the Bright Horn.

Maftan of Waterdeep
An incredibly wealthy merchant. One of the four surviving founders of the Six Coffers Market Priakos. Recently sponsored an expedition to the Far Lands of Anchôromé and the founding of the settlement of Far Anchor. [ Source: FR0 Forgotten Realms Campaign Set – Cyclopedia of the Realms, p.62. Maftoon the Minor (N HM Adp5 of Beshaba)
A member of the Apothecaries and Physicians Guild, and "small-spells" hedge mage. Specializes in the so-called "vengeful vexes," those minor curses that cause incessant sneezing, itching, stuttering and such.

The Mage of Stars
A reclusive mage often rumored to be an incantatar (the rare male version of the incantatrix). Often accompanied by the Ishaari warrior Hulvhyr "Horse-Haired" (CG HM Ra). Was there a 2e spell in FR that did this? I seem to remember some variant of a magic mouth.

from the wizard's spell compendium, this is the only thing that kind of sounds like such a variation. That being said, its bugging me, because I seem to recall the same thing. There was a Halruaan spell that I think could active magic items. The actual effect above would be achievable though by simply having a magic mouth activated whenever a spell like a glyph of warding goes off, etc...

Stealweb (Seven Sisters) is close. Shadow Head and Shadowsteal are also interesitng.

Filverel's doorward (Secrets of the Magister) also has some potential. Irithra's spelltouch would work. Spell Trigger or Greater Spell Trigger would definitely work.

All excellent suggestions. Shadow Head could be the base for The Nine Mouths of Halaster (posted 11/10/18, reposted here for reference):

The Nine Mouths of Halaster
The Mouths, named after the mad mage Halaster (The Lord of Twists and Turns, The Eater of Echoes [That Fade Down The Halls], He Who Eagerly Awaits), appear at random intervals, and consist of a ring of nine levitating human mouths framed by moustache and beard. They appear insubstantial, though they have been known to solidify on occasion, to bite or to snatch up a weapon being wielded against them. The Mouths most often do nothing more than make an insane cackling sound, although upon occasion they speak with passerby, imparting cryptic bits of information or the answers to unasked questions. Far more sinister, the Mouths sometimes emit harmful spells (chain lightning and the tentacles from an Evard's black tentacles spell seem to be favorites), or even act to teleport an unlucky soul straight to somewhere in the depths of the Undermountain.

A native of Sundabar. Dobyn is active in the weapons and arms trade, swapping fine dwarven armscraft for textiles, woodwork, and other materials in short supply in the frozen northern city. The Dolorous Swans of Orophir
Undead swanmays, corrupted by the creeping influence and malign effluence out of Hellgate Keep. It is said that anyone who hears their bleak lament is struck with crippling ennui and overwhelming desire to drown themselves in the fetid waters of their home, the stinking, oily lake formerly known to the elves as Orophir, "The Lake of Long Sunsets." There is a nearby covey of hags that parlays with them, and from them gains the occasional prized specimen to add as one of their shambling servants.

Dornal Rorelgaunt
The Knight of Wasp Island, a now-vanished holding in the middle of the Delimbyr near Secomber. Champion of Tyr. Fell in battle against the orcs of the Black Horde. His remains were used in the crafting of one of Tyr's Lawful Rings (relics of the church of Tyr. Each ring is carved from the breastbone of a fallen champion of the god of Justice. Individual rings are known by the name of their donor, e.g., Khelimbyr's Lawful Ring, which was fashioned from the corpse of the paladin Khelimbyr of Elturel. Powers include protection from evil, 20'r; detect lie; resist heat/cold; and the ability to summon a spectral hammer, 1x/day. There are rumors that in times of need the most valiant of Tyr's champions can manifest close by the ring as a swordwraith or spectral guardian). Rorelgaunt's Ring now sits on a finger of Harkas Kormallis, the current Knight-Champion of Tyr.

Dorrum
An old dwarf, lame, nearly bent in two. Piercing amber eyes under wild blue-black brows. Customarily wrapped up in an old great-coat, green, stained and patched, and a shapeless, broad-brimmed hat over his eyes. Provides divinations and personal fortunes using cast bones, personal effects and various burnt offerings. Claims to be able to contact "the good spirits" which help to find out the right numbers for the smallcoin (numbers) gambling lotteries, his main source of income.

Drallto
[ DRALL-toe, not drall-TOO; drall-too is instead a gambling game popular around the southern shores of the Shining Sea, which involves three dice and a winning condition of rolling 4-5-6 (or 'drallto'), with the victor being first to reach 'drallto' twice. The name comes from an ancient belief that upon every birth the goddess Tyche would roll two dice, with higher numbers giving positive attributes and lower rolls denoting negative influences. In the Tammardulkin saga, on the birth of the hero Drallto, Tyche rolled low twice but was then startled by a hurokh (talking bird) sent by the goddess Selûne, causing her to drop a die again to the table when gathering them into her apron, a roll which the Cosmos accepted and which turned into the most powerful blessing of all ]
        A playwright and author of numerous chapbooks detailing the lives and deeds of legendary Waterdhavians such as Nimoar ('Master of The Hold'), Halaster ('Of Dangers and Devils') and Athar the Shining Knight ('The Life and Living Deeds of The Shining Knight'). His florid and fanciful writings are poorly researched and bear little in the way of truth, but are immensely popular among the common folk of the city.

Love the corrupted swanmays. I picture them as having changed from "white" swans to "black" swans.

I also love the concept behind the bone rings of Tyr's champions, specifically the part in which they may be used to send a version of the original person to aid the wearer. I may steal this concept for use with the witches of Rashemen and telthors of heroes, as I think that very much would fit their culture. It could also fit with them as a means to summon base animal telthors as well (or a bone piece of jewelry that summons a skeletal mount). Finally, it might be interesting if hags might not make something like this of their fellow hags who have fallen. For this concept, it might be interesting to make a new kind of hag kind of like a "spectral mage" concept, but a new specific kind of hag that's EITHER an undead spirit OR bone creation.

Suldown Street Society
A private upper-room club located on Suldown Street, North Ward. Members refer to themselves as "The Boars" (thus leading to local wags' snipes such as "The Bores," and "The Snores of Suldown Street"), and fancy themselves among the movers and shakers of the city. In reality, they spend most of their time lounging around drinking and smoking, swearing fearful oaths, and intiating intricate plots that go nowhere. Members include the lordling Olhin Duthttever, the mage Ormithar, the merchants Lhabbert and Alabardos and Ammeran, the Master of the Society.

Alabardos (LN HM Exp)
An elderly, wrinkled merchant who trades southern crystal and glass for northern furs and leather goods. His dark, weather-beaten skin is set off by silver hair and moustache and light, almost colorless eyes. He is accompanied at all times by two tall, slim, wand-wielding lasses commonly thought to be bodyguards or concubines. They are in fact his daughters, Estlonna and Alaea. A member of the Suldown Street Society.

Ammeran (CN HM)
A fat, dark-eyed man with an excellent memory for names and faces and a fancy for southern wines and young girls. Ammeran is the local Speaker (contact) for the Neverwinter-based Eightstar Trading Coster and chairman of the Suldown Street Society.

Olhin "The Black Baron" Duthttever
An outspoken member of the Suldown Street Society. Olhin liked to fancy himself as a man of many secrets and powerful connections, and thought himself far more clever than he really was. He actually was a titled lordling, having won the rights to a backwater cabbage-and-rutabegas village (Low Ashanar) and some lands southeast of Westbridge (a rough triangle from Enderk's Pond on the trail west from the Stone Bridge to the fortified farm of Elfposting, to the local landmark known as Upright Hill) off of a down-on-his-luck nobleman, in a high-stakes game of chance. Found dead in Buckle Alley, south of the Tower of the Watchful Order, the cause of death apparently being quite a lengthy fall.

Ormithar "Mage of Many Rings" (LN HM Abj9)

Ilighryn Delzagus (NE HM Aris4/W6)
A wealthy Tethyrian merchant (last titled member of the Barony of the Redlands; now an importer of resin and pitch from the Moonshaes and various forest camps ringing the High Forest) and socialite of quiet, cold (some would say malevolent) demeanor. Ilighryn dabbled with the Cult of Ao before they finally faded away in the late 1360's, and it scratched his itch for intrigue and behind-the-scenes manipulating enough that he has since founded and led not only the high-coin and mercantile Taol Club (who meet in the upper-level chambers of The Heap of Pearls, a Castle Ward festhall he owns), but also The Cult of She Who Names Herself Night and Oftener Sorrow, a low-level cell of Shar-worshippers.

Iljack Thaumhand (LN HM T/spellthief)
Black Jack. The "Master of Intrigues" (spymaster) for House Moonstar. A lifetime of attempted poisonings, ingested antidotes and applied venomquench spells have left him with an immunity to almost all known poisons, but also constant heartburn, stomache ache and loose bowels.

Iljant Maermith
An associate of the vigilante Red Sashes. A dark-haired, dark-eyed man of middle years, Iljant is a modestly successful merchant and maker of iron-banded casks and barrels, the kind used by the fishing fleets to pack salted fish and whale oils in for shipping inland. The barrels also make excellent hiding places for individuals and items the Sashes want transported out of the city, or to a Net Street warehouse co-owned by Iljant, for safe storage. For his part Iljant is a simple man, with simple motives.; like most of Waterdeep's merchant citizenry he cares most for money, not ideology or any particular agenda. Still, he likes the fact that the Sashes work for "the good of the citizens, not the nobles," and he also enjoys imagining the intrigues and schemes that surround the people or objects hidden in his barrels.

Ilkaphra Ilzimmer
A noble of House Ilzimmer (eldest daughter, favored of Lord Boroldan). Ilkphara has been missing for some months on an expedition to the Starlight-Haunted Hill (Where the Stars are the Cold White Bones of the Gods), one of the Lost Peaks in the High Forest. Divinations reveal she is not dead, but not much more. Lord Boroldan has begun sending hired swords to search for her.

Illasrae Eirontalar (N HF Aris2)
A young noble of House Eirontalar. Tall, fair-haired, quiet. Owns a magical pendant that can call forth around her vibrant motes of faerie shaped as tiny hummingbirds. The pendant is linked to a larger obelisk in the gardens of the Eirontalar villa with similar properites. Known as The Bejeweled Garden, it was created as a gift from the hierophant Eftoon The Fierce, in recognition of Eirontalar efforts in sustaining the early holy grove that would become known as The Shrines of Nature.

Jlinavhrae of the South (LG HF T/Sor)
The Sorceress of the South. A native of Lapaliiya. Bears extensive ritual green-slime scarring in the manner of the Lapal junglefolk. Captain of a "small-sails" merchant fleet that runs the trade lanes from Waterdeep to the southern lands. Her operation consists of four ships (the most well-known of which, the Sorceress of the South, shares her secondary appellation), slim-hulled and enchanted to outrun many of their competitors. Maintains offices and a residence in Castle Ward, identifiable by the same blazon that marks her sails, a gnarled staff pointing to the dexter, emitting alternating crescents of lightning-bolts and cascades of coins.

Joften "Jools" Ballenbost (CN HM Bar5/P2 of Tempus)
The Holyfist. Acolyte of Tempus. Wears (and wields) gauntlets of ogre strength. Loves to challenge tavern patrons to contests of brawling and wrestling. Dedicates all of his wins (currently somewhere around 110-and-1) to the Lord of Battles. His lone loss was an embarrassingly ill-advised drunken challenge to the halfling Arno "Many-Axes" Boldflagon. It was soon thereafter that Jools purchased his "Holy Fists" from a factor of the Xanathar (to whom he is currently indebted and provides the odd strongarm job), and embarked on a rather prodigious winning streak.

Joljanthrae of the Boundless Delights
Festhall dancer and mid-level escort (accompanies a variety of old and wealthy merchants to clubs and to the revels of nobility and the wealthy, hanging on their arm and on their every word). Oval face, keeps her eyes and lips heavily colored. Long, flowing blonde hair. Wasp-waisted, slender and graceful limbs. Not to be confused with Onthess of the Vivid Delights (who dances most nights at the Golden Nymph in Castle Ward), nor with Talathtra of the Wicked Delights (recently fled from Scornubel after being revealed as a spell-shifted lamia noble).

Jolurra Eltarkh
Priestess of Talona. Recently arrived in Waterdeep from the war-torn, plague-ridden seige of Murann (where she first found her faith). Leaves behind little poisonings wherever she goes. Has begun working among the small-coal sellers of the Market, surreptitiously dropping lumps of tainted charcoal into the otherwise legitimate baskets and sacks. These are treated with spells and alchemical formula that, when burned in hearth or oven, release subtle gases that affect those nearby with coughing and lung diseases. She prays at the Plinth and murmurs from afar during public burials in the City of the Dead, but is careful not to proselytize or otherwise draw attention to herself.

Jondyn of the Bow
Blue-grey eyes, curly flaxen hair. Middle-height, broad-chested. An excellent hunter and deadly shot with the longbow. A native of Westlarch. Often drinks to excess, and only agrees to the odd guiding or hunting job to pay for his tavern stays. Cousin of the Senior Civilar Caedan Lythlyn.

Meirshal Feladryn (NG HM Exp12/P4 of Deneir)
(MEER-Shawl) Master of the small chapel of Deneir located in an undercellar of the Zoarstar. He is also a Master Guildsman of the Scribes and Scriveners Guild, and a member of the Council of New Olamn. Regarded as a preeminent expert on the religious myths and practices of the allied churches of Denier, Oghma, and Milil. He sports a deep, canorous voice and long sandy-brown hair habitually pulled back into an Uthgardt braid. Well into his sixties, surprisingly strong and nimble for a man his age.

Melain Thannsdan (LN ½EM)
The seneschal of Swanstar Court (a trio of row-houses on Seawatch Street owned by the Moonstar noble clan and used to house visiting family and initiates of the House of the Moon). A slender, fine-boned man, said to have elvish blood in him, with a commanding bellow that belies his physical stature. Melain runs the Court with clockwork precision, constantly running from one wing to the other, checking on the butlers, serving maids, belarjacks, cooks and visiting guests under his supervision.

Meleg Blackrothé
Short, thin, rather disagreeable. His tiefling heritage manifests itself in a double row of canine teeth and eyes that, uncovered in full moonlight, appear as great empty, weeping sockets. Carries The Burning Bow of Elesteen (no + to hit or damage, but on a natural 20 a fired arrow is enchanted with the properties of a four-round Melf's acid arrow spell).

Melykuur (LN HM Monk7/P3 of Oghma)
Guardian of the Written Word (the Oghmanyte portal to the Reading Room). In his youth, Melykuur was a member of the Storm Staves, an infamous band of warrior-monks. The Storm Staves fell amidst the Border Kingdom ruins of Revenshold, in combat with the enraged green wyrm Glaurshrineth "The Great Green Doom" and the armsmen of the Baneite priest Thaerus Salarth. It is rumored that Melykuur still possesses the Storm Staff of Arvhaelea, the magical length of ashwood that the band took their name from. He now makes his home in the Font of Knowledge, keeping the portal to the Reading Room clear of unwanted outsiders and prying acolytes alike.

Méthorn
(MAY-thorn) Publisher of Méthorn's Realms Afar (or Méthorn's Messenger), which contains news on spring crops in the Greenfields and precious metal yields in Mirabar and unrest on the trade roads of Amn, all matters of interest to merchant and investor gathered from in-bound ships and caravans. The Realms Afar is not read by nobles or wealthy traders, who gain such information in a more timely manner from their own factors, but by middle-coin merchants and investors and those who would consider themselves as such, all of whom eagerly scour the pages in search of any mercantile edge. Indeed, a rapidly growing source of income for the broadsheet is advertisment revenue from various "roundshields" who target such small-time investors, as well as a high number of confidence-men and swindlers who post breathless descriptions of "can't miss" business propositions in effort to part them from their coin. Méthorn himself is not in league with any of these schemes, but he does not mind profting from the coin they bring him.

Oblenn "Dragonbold" (CN HM F9)
An ex-adventurer and proprietor of the Blackhorse Lane Tavern in Trades Ward (the tavern's name comes not from its' address – the Blackhorse lies on north Snail Street, three doors east of the Golden Horn Gambling House – but, rather, from the lettering on the huge, scarred and flame-scorched waypost that hangs behind the bar, allegedly salvaged from the ruins of fell Ascore). The one-time seamaster of the Seas' Red Bitch (a famed and feared blacksail of the Sword Coast), and member of Targheld's Seven, a legendary mercenary fellowship noted for plundering the Netherese ruins of Ascore. In the years since his retirement, Oblenn has been linked to rumors of many cached magical items and servitor creatures hidden under the tavern and about town.

The Obsfucated Order
A heretical cult of Deneir ("Not every truth should be told"), founded by the half-mad Tethan priest St. Eavvyn of the Many Obsfucations (The Half-Haired, The Sesquipedalian Sensate, The Erudite Obscurationist), once one of the highest among the mortal councils of the God of the Written Word. The Order believes that The Metatext, those legendary words said to be hidden throughout all the numerous writings of Man, is too dangerous to ever be uncovered, as it would irrevocably lay bare all the mysteries and wonderment of Faerûn.
      In order to delay the day of its unveiling, the Order busies itself with crafting false copies of written texts, physically altering or stealing and hiding away others, burning and destroying libraries and storehouses of knowledge and, in general, keeping the lorekeepers and priests of Deneir and Oghma otherwise busy running around repairing the damage done through their activities. Their amphigoric re-writings in particular bedevil the scribes of Candlekeep and other repositories of knowledge to no end, and faithful of the Lord of All Glyphs have come to habitually curse Eavvyn and his ilk when confronted with a particularly confusing syntactic arrangement ("clear as mud" is the common turn of phrase).
      It is currently believed that the Order, no longer content with minor interpolations and intercalations, seeks to sustain a Grand Emendation, fueled by the burning sacrifice of the library of The Inner Chamber of Berdusk, that will irrevocably change every copy of Arflaur's Basic Truths (a holy scripture of the church) across the Western Heartlands into cryptic gibberish. The resultant untangling and writing of new editions would keep would-be Metatext-seekers busy for quite some time (it may also result in changes to how scribes and learned men percive the very fabric of Faerûn, but such wide-ranging changes are only theoretical at best).

Oggyn Orl
The Flaunch of Flimblebur (The Great Flimb). The svirfneblin suzerain of Flimblebur, rival to the Great Garnet Lord of Ulversdeeping. His domain extends from the guarded outposts at The Scintillating Stairs and the Frozen Teardrops (winding tradeways carved of glittering mica and pyrite) to the mushroom farms outside of the warrens of Flimblebur itself. Breeds hook horrors in the Clattering Caves as sentries and for his drovers to send against the gnomes of Ulversdeeping.

Ogo (CN ½OgM War3) and Joss (NE ½OgM War4) Grimmar
A pair of common street thugs who earn coin as tavern rowdies (bouncers), dockhands, and low-level enforcers for the Xanathar. Ogo ("the brawn," STR18) has arms and upper torso covered in tattoos of various designs, while Joss ("the brains," INT7 but WIS14) has a fancy for silver jewelry and colorful neck-scarves and cheap perfumes.

Olastraun "Battle-Blest"
An armsman of House Hawkwinter. Stout, silent, pious. Severely receeding hairline set off by a rather luxurious beard which he keeps forked and braided, in the style of the dwarves of Adbar. Once, in battle, he was enveloped in deific radiance and blood-haze, healing him of wounds and turning the blades of all who opposed him. Gifted three fine warhorses and a masterful greatshield by the Hawkwinters, tithed his sword to the House of Heroes in recognition of Tempus' favor.

The Villainous Cookery of Zelmuth the Foul (Zelmuth's Black Bones)
Adder Lane in Dock Ward is home to a large numbers of e'enfastings and cookery houses. On occasion, the smell of culinary arts here inexplicably turn sour and acrid. During these times it is said to be the haunting of a local cook, one Zelmuth Orlin, who was boiled alive in his own stewpot for the crime of poisoning sixteen persons or more; this sentence and punishment were carried out by his fellow citizens, not the black-robes. Some say his boiled bones are still interred, in their iron burial-pot, deep beneath the cobbles here. Some also whisper that on odd nights they arise to seek vengeance, a great battered cookpot flying through the night sky, surrounded by a deadly whirling sphere of bones and gouts of scalding, acrid broth.

Vonus of Ithride (LG HM P4 of Ilmater)
A native of Tethyr. Vonus is a member of the Ilmataran mission in South Ward, and an associate of the vigilante Red Sashes organization (he reports to the midwife Naereetha). Kind-hearted yet pragmatic. Flaxen-haired, clean-shaven. Thin nose and overlarge front teeth. He sides with the militant faction of the temple, headed by the Suffering Shield Tethan Stron.

Voralanya Maragund
A flirtatious, alabaster-skinned socialite and common sight at the balls and fêtes of the upper class. Also a ruthless, cold-hearted sociopath. A devout worshiper of Myrkul (formerly) and now Shar, and one of the most feared mage-assassins of the North, under the alias of "Khandaala" (Calishite for "That Which Comes at Night," an older name for both the demon owl and an older aspect of the goddess Shar). Her weapon of choice is a purplish, wavy-bladed dagger of puissant magical powers, and she is also rumored to possess some sort of innate shadow-shifting abilities.

Vornung the Vastable
The Bull Raging Argent (so-named for the heraldic device of his Illuskan forebears). Of long and able service to Lord Nasher of Neverwinter, as both mercenary captain and personal agent. The current Neveren envoy (ambassador) to Waterdeep and the Lords Alliance. Stout, silver-haired, bearded. Still roaring and rearing, even this far into his twilight years.

Vushta of the Blue Sigils (N HF War2/Sor6)
A native of Thesk, and a former Thayan slave-dancer. Vushta was once a member of the adventuring group known as the Swordsisters, although she is long retired from active adventuring. After a brief apprenticeship with Khelben Arunsun, she opened and now runs a school of manners and social etiquette for the daughters of wealthy merchants and minor nobility in Castle Ward (Vushta's House of Grace, also known as The Setting of Blue Sigils, west-front Street of Silver, just north of Keltarn Street). She keeps her still-vibrant azure markings and various battle-scars covered these days, although the coldness in her eyes and steel in her voice still shine through from time to time.
