One of the users of Candlekeep appears to be operating their PC with a virus running on it.

My personal mail box is currently being flooded by messages indicating that an attempt to send an e-mail to wiseguy_at_wizards.com has failed.

The e-mail to wiseguy is almost certainly being generated by the MyDoom virus (which was discovered on 26th January 2004). One of the effects of the virus is that it will send e-mails to people in your address book using other addresses in your address book as the source address. This means that if a delivery fails, the message doesn't come back to you, it comes back to the spoof address (in this case me).

It would appear that someone, somewhere has the following two addresses in their address book:

kahonen_at_softhome.net
wiseguy_at_wizards.com

I have explored all other avenues and the users of Candlekeep are the only people I can imagine that would have both of the addresses.

I would be very grateful if people reading this could check their e-mail address books and if they have both addresses listed, go to the following address and download the appropriate tool to remove the virus:

http://vil.nai.com/vil/content/v_100983.htm

In case anyone wonders, I am NOT accusing anyone of doing this deliberately. I'm just asking for your help.

Thanks for your time.

Note for Alaundo: aplogies for posting this here but my personal e-mail address is rapidly becoming unusable.

I dont look at any mails from peopleI dont know so I doubt it could be me. I also do not log onto candle keep when I am not at home. So, Im even more sure its not me since I am currently on a school system that is treated with eanough attention to rival small gov. ran companies.

Thanks for the responses.

I had no e-mails "returned to me" yesterday so I can only assume the problem is sorted.

Sounds like we need to update the Book of Vile Darkness. I have heard of this new demon-spirit, and as always I wonder where someone gets the desire to create such abominations . . . .

(Hmm . . . how should the entry go? "Create Doom Virus (Prerequisites: Knowledge (portal-programing) 27 ranks, Speak Language (Black Code) (as opposed to Black Speech ) . . . .")

Hmmm, recently I read a scroll dealing with said contamination. I believe it detailed the recovery of the hard-drive, but it is a tedious process.......

I've checked my Address books for all my emails, and I can't find them kahonen- I'm clear of the virus. I didn't thinkl it would have been me however, I run the most recent version Nortons Firewall, and Anti-virus, and update continously.

Thanks for alerting us anyway Kahonen, I hope you get this sorted out. And I URGE all other Candlekeep users to check their address book.

The actual virus itself is not the problem, it's what can be built into this particular coding that has the potential to cause greater harm. I think there will probably be a number of versions before this beastie is brought down...

Everyone should really be running some kind of commercial quality virus scanning software at this point, lord knows I do (and a firewall wouldn't hurt). But, as far as viruses go that one is pretty benign...comparatively, seeing as I have written more destructive viruses. Not that I'd ever use one. Seriously thought, for those of you who do not function under the robust security protocols I use, do yourself a favor and get some decent protection for your machines, it isn't hard or even expensive these days...unless you want the tools I use, in which case you are gonna need like six zeros.
