ESV Skyrim is being released on Friday. While i am 100% excited about it's release, i hope i am still able to get some good reading time in without the game stealing too much of my attention.

I have been waiting for this game ever since i first started playing Oblivion. Hope it lives up to the hype!

I just found out Australian distributors broke the street release date, and have started selling it early. Skyrim is now available here, so I expect my pre-order will arrive by special mail tomorrow.

Wow, im not sure what the Australian rule is regarding breaking a street date release. Here in America it is a $20,000 fine PER incident.

Maybe they want to ask forgiveness for having made the distribution of Mortal Kombat illegal

And yeah, Skyrim will be awesome. I'm not a big fan of the hit-a-rock-with-your-sword-to-become-a-swordmaster system (or a summoned creature, whatever), but the new perks system could make leveling interesting.

When you've got a good setting, just add a bunch of dragons to make it epic!

Yep, i get chills every time i think about playing it. I loved Oblivion and i have heard that they have fixed all of the little things people complained about for that game....plus the graphics are AMAZING.

Shouldn't this thread be in General Chat section instead?

Anyway, The Infernal City is on my To-Read list. I am not really fond of reading novels which are 99.9% based on games. But the blurb sounds interesting, so I'm giving it a try.

Yeah i have been meaning to get to that book too. I think a Realms style novel line could easily work for the Elder Scolls series

I don't recall there being any specific law against it, as it's a pretty regular occurrence here. Both Arkham City and Modern Warfare 3 released a day earlier as well. It's usually standard practice for the "big name titles" released each year.

How do we already have a game of the decade when the decade is only two years old? It's like advertising for the funniest movie of the year in February...

Maybe he simply meant of the last 10 years. I gotta admit that RPGs in general have been in decline since the late 90s. It is still running full-steam in Japan, but they don't even bother to making international versions now.

American RPGs have a few hits here and there (i.e. Dragon Age, NWN2) but nothing compared to the snes/ps1 era. Even the PS2 had a few good titles, but nothing on PS3/X360 yet (and don't you dare say FFXIII).

Well good luck with that. Morrowind and Oblivion didn't move me so much, but I'm optimistic for this one. Lots can happen in 10 years, especially in an industry that moves so fast. Maybe there's a future ahead with no Gears of Duty: Counter Battlefield every 3 months.

Oh and for the record, this scroll feels weird in the novel section.

Many things;
- Closing Gates got old really fast. The story in general was meh.
- The leveling system, while somewhat realistic, was not as fun as conventionnal systems IMO.
- Being able to talk to everyone looks incredible at first, until you realise that they pretty much all say the same thing (with the same voice).
- Being able to pick up everything is completely useless
- Melee combat was kinda dull (tough some critics pointed out that it hasn't been changed in Skyrim, so I'll roll a mage)
- A big world is useless if it is filled with nothing of interest 95% of the time. Fast-travel is mandatory, thus remove the need for such a big world.

I feel like too much effort was put into making the game realistic and wide, and not enough on mechanics and story.

Despite all that, I enjoyed Oblivion, for one playthrough. I did all guild quests (the best part of the game), the main quest and many sub-quests.

You should enjoy many of the changes made for Skyrim then, including:

*over 100 voice actors used for the characters
*dialogue takes place in real time, no more zoom in cut scenes
*tons of UNIQUE dungeons/caves
*specialized perks when leveling up (similar to Fallout)
*special kill moves for combat
*etc

I loved Oblivion and thought it was an amazing game. Sure there were plenty of small things that could have been done differently, but that game was released in 2006 when the 360 was brand new.

For me it's going to be a long day at work waiting to go home and play Skyrim!

Yeah I heard. The perks alone are going to make me enjoy the game much more, and multiple playthroughs might be an interesting option. About the unique caves, there were some of those in Oblivion, but I always refrained from entering them because I didn't want to enter a place that some later quests would take me there anyway. Or kill a named NPC who would have been involved in a later mission.

Fighting dragons looks good too, and mercenaries for hire might add alot to the gameplay. I just hope it won't get repetitive too fast. I passed by a local game store before heading to work, and it was already sold out (a small game store though).

So far, mostly good stuff. Excelent leveling system, perks variety, dungeons variety, good difficulty (though I don't use companions). It's quite buggy, but it was expected and not game breaking (I had to reset once).

I feel like maybe magic was nerfed a bit, good spells are hard to find and the mage's guild is very far from the starting point. I still haven't found spells to open locks, forcing me to level lockpicking (which was useless in Oblivion), they probably threw that out. Detect life was nerfed big-time, it is no longer a buff but a concentration spell of mid level, it's kinda useless now.

Sneaking perks are godlike (x15 damage on backstab with a dagger, yes please!). I really like archery now, especially when combined with a high sneak skill.

Can't say much about the storyline, I walked away from it as soon as I killed the first dragon. Guild quests are so far as entertaining as in Oblivion, with much more stuff to do. The introduction to the Dark Brotherhood was incredible, but I won't spoil it. You will probably find yourself drowned in quests to do really early in the game, as almost everyone in this lazy world have stuff that needs to be done by others. Well, more gold for you.

I also think that trainers are now extremely good, since not only does it raise a skill, but 5 points in any skill will give a good chunk of the next level too. I now make sure to raise 5 pts at every level (helped me get started with pickpocket, which always fail at low level).

One thing that i thought was lame is that there is no character screen where you can see what worn equipment looks like. Now you need to zoom in/out in 3rd person view to see what stuff looks like on your character. Oh well, other than that i am loving it so far....even when a dragon attacked me from behind when i was jogging through the woods! lol good stuff, scared the hell out of me because i had my surround sound cranked up
